Fierce Love Rising
Original, 7-colour, linocut print on archival Stonehenge white paper.
5” x 5” image on 7” x 7” paper
Very, limited edition of 10. Reduction print.
I created 'Fierce Love Rising,' while wrestling with the challenge of holding onto hope while witnessing horrific state violence and unimaginable human suffering and loss. This small print is a tribute to those who persist in courage and compassion in the face of injustice, and also a prayer joining voices worldwide calling for an end to the violence and displacement. Here a colossal figure, haloed and striding through the ocean, cradles a boat of refugees in one arm while defiantly extending the other against an ominous war ship. The image embodies the fierce love of a protective mother, resisting oppression and carrying her children to safety. This print is a humble offering, a hope-against-hope for the triumph of a love so fierce it can rise above the most tumultuous sea of violence and injustice
For this print I used a reduction print-making process which involves progressively carving away and printing multiple layers from a single linoleum block, with each layer being a different colour. As each layer is printed, further carving is done to remove areas that should remain the current colour , resulting in the final seven-coloured print. Because of the carving away process, the block cannot be re-used for making further prints, making this a very tiny, but time intensive edition.
** Because each print is slightly different in colouring in this edition, I will send you a photo of your specific print before I mail it.
