When I go away on retreat, I often think of the story of the prophet Elijah, who, after an exhausting encounter with the exploitative rulers of the day flees into the wilderness asking God to just end his misery now. I love the tenderness of God's response in this story. Instead of responding to Elijah's questions that flow from exhaustion and despair, God simply allows Elijah to sleep, providing water and food (through the ravens in one story and through angels in another.). In seasons of exhaustion, we all need this kind of tender tending and invitation to rest.
