"... each year the young women of Israel go out for four days to commemorate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite." (Judges 11:40). This tiny verse is tucked away after a horrific story of an innocent girl sacrificed as part of her father's flippant prayer for victory. In the midst of story after story of violence and exploitation of women in the book of Judges, this verse speaks of the women who did not let the stories of the women that went before them, nor injustice they experienced, be forgotten. The act of remembering and re-telling is painful, yes, but is also an important part of working toward justice, ending systemic violence, and honouring the stories of those who are often hidden.
